Life as an Adventure: Embracing the Unexpected

Over the last three years, I’ve started to see life as one big adventure. This shift in perspective has transformed how I approach challenges, particularly my vision loss. Initially, I grieved the changes and struggled to continue my hobbies and daily activities. But by reframing life as a series of small adventures, I’ve found joy and resilience in the journey.

From Tragedy to Adventure

Viewing my vision loss as part of life’s adventure has made everything easier to handle. Instead of seeing it as a tragedy, I’ve embraced it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

One pivotal moment in this journey was returning to the VA’s Blind Rehabilitation Center at American Lake. There, I learned life-changing skills like using voice commands to communicate with my computer and employing navigation apps to travel independently. These tools have opened the door to countless new adventures and given me the confidence to tackle challenges on my own.

The Great Adventure: Brisbane, Australia

Not long after my time at American Lake, I embarked on one of my biggest adventures yet—I flew solo to Brisbane, Australia, to visit family. While I initially felt apprehensive, the skills I gained in rehab made the trip possible.

With navigation apps and written plans in hand, I felt confident exploring new places. I could look up bus schedules, write down stops, and navigate unfamiliar streets. Of course, not everything went perfectly. I occasionally missed a bus stop or got on the wrong bus, but drivers were always kind and helpful, reminding me that small detours are part of the adventure.

Tools That Transform

Along the way, I’ve also adapted my mobility tools. I started using a visibility cane in addition to my support cane. Using visibility cane, helps others recognize that I’m visually impaired, which has made navigating public spaces much easier. Many people don’t associate a support cane with vision loss, but the visibility cane is a clear signal, thanks to awareness campaigns and training programs.

Gratitude for the Journey

Looking back, I’m grateful for the resources and training I received at the rehab center. The tools and skills I gained there have empowered me to continue my adventure, no matter where life takes me.

A Life of Possibility By viewing life as an adventure, I’ve discovered that every challenge brings an opportunity to learn, grow, and explore. Each step, whether big or small, is part of the journey.
