Some days just don’t go as planned, and today felt like one of those days—a continuation of yesterday’s challenges. It’s not something I’m used to. As someone who’s worked hard to adapt after losing my vision, I’ve grown accustomed to celebrating small victories. But every now and then, the struggles come back to remind me of those early days when failures felt like a daily occurrence.
Yesterday’s Misadventure
It started with a simple plan: take a bus trip to accomplish a small errand. What actually happened? I got on the wrong bus three times. Hours were spent riding around in circles, but I finally reached my destination.
Frustrating? Absolutely.
A waste of time? Not entirely.
Despite the setbacks, I learned a lot from the experience. I figured out new ways to navigate the system and proved to myself, once again, that persistence pays off.
Today’s Struggles
Unfortunately, today didn’t feel much better.
- Doctor’s Appointment: I’d been to this clinic before, but it had been a while, and I couldn’t remember exactly where it was. I had to ask for help finding my way.
- Lunch Frustration: Stopping by the cafeteria seemed like a good idea, but the food options were disappointing—just greasy, unappealing dishes.
- Finding the Bus Stop: After lunch, I couldn’t find my way out of the building and had to ask for assistance again.
Each time I needed help, I had to explain my situation. I use a support cane, which is red and white to signify visual impairment, but people don’t often recognize it. Instead, they assume I have a physical issue, like a knee problem. This misunderstanding adds an extra layer of difficulty, leaving me feeling invisible and misunderstood.
Finding Strength in Frustration
By the time I crossed the street to head home, I felt disheartened. But as I reflect on these experiences, I realize that every challenge teaches me something valuable. Yesterday and today may have felt like failures, but they were also opportunities to practice resilience and problem-solving.
Yes, I got lost. Yes, I had to ask for help more times than I would have liked. And yes, it was frustrating. But I’m learning to see these moments not as setbacks but as stepping stones on my journey. Some days are harder than others, and that’s okay. Each day is a chance to keep moving forward, one small victory at a time.
