Embracing Change and Rediscovering Independence with Wet Macular Degeneration

When I was diagnosed with wet macular degeneration, it felt like the end of my world. Learning new things has always been a challenge for me, so adapting to this sudden, life-changing condition seemed overwhelming at first. But over the past four years, I’ve embarked on a journey to reclaim my independence, find alternative ways to pursue my passions, and reimagine everyday tasks with the help of technology.

Finding New Routines with the Help of Technology

Today, I am proud to manage my daily routines independently, from shopping and cooking to cleaning. Technology has become my ally in navigating tasks that once felt impossible. Although I no longer drive, I use public transportation and para-transit services, which have become my new means of moving through life with confidence and purpose.

An Overseas Adventure on the Horizon

Despite some apprehension, I’m preparing for an overseas adventure I’ve dreamed of for years, with Brisbane, Australia, as my ultimate destination. The idea of traveling solo is daunting, but knowing I’ll have support along the way brings me comfort. I recently discovered that Alaska Airlines allows me to bring my medical devices, such as my indispensable Acrobat CCTV, without counting it toward my luggage limit. This device, in its convenient wheeled carrying case, has become my essential travel companion.

Training for a New Way of Seeing

Given the nature of my vision impairment, learning to use my devices effectively is crucial. In just a week, I’ll be heading to American Lake, a VA blind rehab center, for specialized training. I’m fortunate to have access to these VA resources, which often provide more comprehensive services than state programs. This upcoming training marks another step in my journey toward self-reliance and embracing life fully despite my condition.

Inviting You to Join My Creative Journey

Although my journey with macular degeneration has been challenging, it has also offered new avenues for growth and independence. As I work to reclaim my photography skills and explore my artistry, I invite you to join me. Together, let’s explore the resilience, creativity, and joy that can arise even in the face of life’s unexpected turns.

Thank you for being part of my journey—one that’s teaching me to see the world anew and find beauty in the challenges.
